Frequently Asked Questions

What is Year End Filing?

Year End filing happens each January when payroll providers prepare and submit all the tax paperwork for the previous year. This includes:

For employers:

  • Final quarterly tax returns (Form 941)

  • Annual unemployment returns (Form 940)

  • State-level tax and unemployment returns

  • Processing any remaining tax payments

For workers:

  • W-2s for employees showing their wages and tax withholdings

  • 1099s for contractors showing their total payments

This process ensures businesses stay compliant with tax laws and provides workers with the documents they need for their personal tax returns.

Q4: When do W-2s/1099s need to be distributed to workers?

W-2s and 1099s must be postmarked by January 31st. Electronic copies must also be available on or before that date.
